Golden Welcome Center History

Many Years – Desire to have a visitors center in Golden and a permanent home for the Greater Golden Chamber of Commerce
 

1995 July – Formation of Golden Visitors Center Corporation
 

1995 August 15 – Adoption of Golden Visitors Center, Inc. bylaws
 

1995 November – Golden Visitors Center granted 501(c)(3) nonprofit tax exempt status
 

1995 November – Fundraising started
 

1996 March 1 – Agreement to lease land from the City of Golden
 

1996 June 4 – Golden Visitors Center ground-breaking
 

1996 November 4 – Loan secured with the Golden Civic Foundation
 

1997 May 12 – Management and lease agreement formed between the Golden Visitors Center, Inc. and the Greater Golden Chamber of Commerce
 

1997 May 12 – Golden Visitors Center Grand Opening
 

2001 December 1 – Pay Off Debt Campaign Started and Golden Civic Foundation’s $50,000 matching grant announced
 

2002 May 8 – Mortgage Burning Celebration
 

2014 August – The Golden Visitors Center Lobby Remodel, Phase 1 and 2 started. The project cost approximately $90,000, which was funded primarily by Coors Brewing Company and the Golden Civic Foundation.   Other contributors were the Golden Visitors Center, Golden Lions Club and Golden Rotary Club.
 

2015 April - Golden Lions Club purchased and donated the storage shed behind the Visitors Center.  Cost of the shed was $4,500.
 

2015 September 1 - The management agreement between the Golden Chamber of Commerce and Golden Visitors Center was terminated at the request of the Chamber of Commerce.
 

2016 April – The Golden Bike Library opened at the Golden Visitors Center as a partnership between the Golden Visitors Center and City of Golden.
 

2018 April – The upstairs Golden Visitors Center Boardroom was remodeled with new furniture and interior walls redone.  Cost was $23,000 with contributions coming from the Golden Civic Foundation, Coors Brewing and the Golden Visitors Center.  A “Sponsor a Chair” fundraising campaign was held, inviting individuals and businesses to donate toward the purchase of new boardroom chairs.
 

2018 April - The Golden Visitors Center Boardroom was renamed the "Heritage Boardroom” as neither Coors nor the Golden Civic Foundation wished to have the room named after them, preferring instead a name that honors Golden’s heritage. 
 

2018 April – The Golden Visitors Center was renamed to Golden Visitors & Information Center to more accurately reflect the focus of the Center as more than just for visitors.
 

2020 August – The John Tracy Memorial Garden was dedicated on the grounds of the Golden Visitors & Information Center.
 

2021 June – Creekside Patio improvements were made including new lights, counter and bar.
 

2023 July – The Golden Visitors and Information Center updated its operational name to Golden Welcome Center to better reflect the broader range of services it provides to both residents and visitors. 
 

2025 February 28 – The Golden Visitors Center Corporation formally notified the City of Golden of its intent to exercise the option to extend the land lease for an additional 30-year term, beginning on March 1, 2026.  Receipt of this notice was graciously acknowledged by City Manager Scott Vargo.
 

2025 June 2 – The Vicki Wagner Memorial Garden was dedicated on the east entrance of the Golden Welcome Center building.  Vicki Wagner was a dedicated volunteer, where she devoted many years to welcoming visitors and supporting the Golden community. 
 

2025 Summer – Outside patio stairs were replaced with funds from the City of Golden Thriving Community Grant.
